Chapman beats Redlands on penalty kick

ORANGE, Calif. -  The Chapman University men's soccer team scored its only goal, a game-winning penalty kick by junior M Jeff Shah in the 68th minute as the Panthers defeated  the visiting University of Redlands 1-0 Wednesday evening at Wilson Field.

After Redlands (1-4) controlled the tempo for much of the first half, the Panthers put the pressure on the Bulldogs in the second and took advantage of foul inside the Redlands' keeper box. Shah scored his second goal of the season on the ensuing penalty kick to give Chapman (3-1) a 1-0 lead.

Redlands F Ross Schunk had an opportunity to tie the game less than five minutes later as the Bulldogs earned their own penalty kick in the 73rd minute, but Chapman sophomore GK Tyler Hadzinsky came up with a diving save to preserve the lead and the victory for the Panthers. Hadzinsky had three saves to record his first shutout of the season. It was also Chapman's second shutout of the year.

Chapman last defeated Redlands in 1996 by a score of 2-0. The Panthers and Bulldogs played to a draw in 1997 and '98.
