ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team wrapped up a busy week at home on Friday with a narrow loss to visiting Trinity. The Panthers went 0-3 as they took on three tough opponents in five days.
On Monday, Chapman fell 9-0 to Amherst as the visitors took all matches in straight sets. On Wednesday, the Panthers were able to capture a couple points but ultimately fell 7-2 to Vassar in Anaheim. Charlie Werman cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles and Josh Sarsfield won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.
Friday's match was a 5-4 battle but Trinity was able to pull out the last point to take the match. The Bantams took two of the three doubles matches but Werman and Brett Buford gutted out a 9-8 win in the No. 1 match to capture a point for the Panthers.
Buford won the No. 1 singles match in straight sets but Trinity countered with a straight-set win at No. 4. All four other matches need a third set to be decided with Werman edging out the 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 and Sarsfield winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 6. However, Trinity took the No. 2 and No. 5 matches in three sets to clinch the team win in the match.
The Panthers continue a long homestand with a 10 a.m. match against Lewis & Clark on Wednesday at the Anaheim Hills Racquet Club.
