Women's soccer quintet earns All-SCIAC honors

ORANGE, Calif. – Fresh off winning the SCIAC Tournament championship in its first year of eligibility, the Chapman University women's soccer team had five players named to the 2012 All-SCIAC Women's Soccer team, including four first team selections – the most in the conference.

Senior D Carly Sanchez headlines the Chapman quintet after the Panthers posted a 0.63 goals-against average and 12 team shutouts. The defensive anchor led the Panthers with 1,988 minutes played – sitting out just 19 minutes all season. Junior M Val Sobol, sophomore F Rebeccah Bortz and sophomore GK Marissa Fehrman joined Sanchez on the first team. Meanwhile, senior M Karina Cisneros earned second team honors.

Sobol led Chapman and ranked second in the SCIAC in total points with 25 (10 goals, five assists), including six game-winning goals and is currently ranked ninth all-time in Chapman history with 60 career points. She and Bortz ran neck-and-neck in the team scoring race all season long with Bortz coming up just an assist shy with 24 points (10 goals, four assists) in two fewer games and about 660 fewer minutes played.

In her first year at Chapman, Fehrman dazzled in goal, posting a 0.56 goals-against average and eight shutouts to go along with 78 saves and an .876 saves percentage. The sophomore recorded a 15-4-1 overall mark as the Panthers' keeper.

Cisneros was rewarded for a big season as the Panthers' center-mid after setting career-highs in goals (six) and total points (15). The second team selection scored three game-winning goals as well.
